Set your table in 3 steps

First of all, what is the perfect table? It's the table that makes you happy and where you want to dine for hours with your guests, family or family members. Just as tastes differ, so do opinions about beautiful tables.

Here I want to explain to you what for me is the perfectly set table and how to set it in 3 steps. You can then add your own things to it. I will show you examples and most of all I want to tell you to enjoy the anticipation of the perfectly set table.

Because table setting is life.

Step 1: choose 1 or 2 main colors

Step 1: choose 1 or 2 main colors

Within these 2 colors you can vary, so you apply the ton-sur-ton method. If you choose green and brown, you can mix all different shades within these 2 colors, complemented with white. So for example a dark green plate, with a khaki colored tablecloth and a brown napkin complemented with gold cutlery.

Note: gold for me is not a permanent color but an "accessory color" that you can always add in addition to silver.

Here you can see how the colors green and brown take the lead. The white items create tranquility. Vary especially with different shades that gives playfulness to your table. And regularly add subtle colors to the table in the accessories.

"Literal translation ton sur ton: combination of tones within the same color."

An eye-catcher as a base

An eye-catcher as a base

Choose your colors based on a beautiful decanter you bought, for example. Since it is such a defining color in terms of atmosphere, here I chose to work only in shades of yellow and gold. This way you create unity and it enhances the color.

Choose a patterned tablecloth

Choose a patterned tablecloth

In this example, I chose an all-purpose tablecloth. Since these are true winter colors, I would therefore choose here to accentuate the colors and carry the green through nicely. It is reflected here in the napkins and glassware. This still adds calmness to the busy tablecloth.

By the way, the basic rule for me is: if you choose a print in your tablecloth, go for a plain napkin and vice versa.

See what you have on hand

See what you have on hand

If you have a lot of green accessories at home, you can easily put them all together. One color can be added, for example ochre, but all shades of green is also beautiful. So here too the ton sur ton method is perfectly implemented.

Nothing is more inviting than a beautifully set table. It makes for an overwhelming entrance and makes your guests feel especially welcome.

Step 2: work in groups of 3

Step 2: work in groups of 3

For the accessories, I work in groups of 3 pieces. In these, choose different items, for example, a vase, a candlestick and a water carafe. In addition, choose different heights, which gives the table depth.

Other components of a group may include: tea light holder, bottle of wine, flat bowl with decorative fruit or vegetables, decorative ornament. Also consider items appropriate to the season, such as baubles at Christmas.

As you can see I put 3 items together here. It gives the table peace when spots are left empty and not everything is crowded. In addition, open spots are perfect for when you have prepared a shared dining menu for your guests or for baskets of bread, bowl of olives. This is also a convenient way to build your table for those who like to gourmet.

Christmas is the exception

Christmas is the exception

But the ultimate Christmas table is now lavishly set and often not shared dining. So at Christmas I choose long garlands of decorations 9 times out of 10.

Visit a Christmas show and score beautiful table styling in the form of dried fruit, for example (or make your own) combined with wooden accessories or fun rustic baubles. Pine branches or branches with berries are always a perfect base for the garland. Place lots of candles in different heights and types between the garland.

Step 3: work with layers

Step 3: work with layers

Work with layers. You do this with: tablecloths, placemats (yes even together), underplates, dinner plates, appetizer plates or soup plates and napkins. Layers give body to your beautifully set table.

Here you see 5 layers. I think that works tremendously well. The whole thing is very colorful, but still ton-sur-ton. In addition, you can see that you can mix patterns together just fine provided you interrupt it with a solid board. So also important to have solid boards in your collection.

More layers....

Here you can see that by adding a simple sprig you create even more body. I am mega fan of capping a styling by a sprig, flower, dried sprig, thyme, bow etc. Throw all your creativity into this.
